Radio host Alex Jones has said that the 2012 school massacre that killed 20 children and six staff members was fabricated to sway the public against restricting personal weapons in the US.
The Trial of the American Conspiracyist Alex Jonesset out yesterday to decide how much he should pay the family of a child killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut, which he says is fake.
Mark Bankston, the lawyer for the parents of six-year-old victim Jesse Lewis, said the lie about Sandy Hook became a “viral sensation” for Jones, who spread it to millions of people.
“Mr. Jones repeatedly promoted the idea that Sandy Hook is fake. He was patient zero for the fraud over Sandy Hook,” Bankston said.
Jones, founder of the Infowars radio network, has said that major media corporations and gun control activists colluded to fabricate the tragedy that killed 20 school children and six staff members at Newtown, Connecticut Elementary School on 14 December 2012.
The trial in Texas comes two months after another tragedy in which the gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in what is reported to be the deadliest attack since Sandy Hook.
Jones has already admitted that the attack happened, but insists he is not responsible for the suffering of the Sandy Hook parents who have received threats and harassment from his supporters.
The lawsuit is taking place in Texas, where his Infowars agency is based, and has been filed by one of the families of victims harassed by Jones’ followers.
Plaintiffs Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, Jesse’s parents, are seeking $100 million in damages.
Jones has previously been punished for his statements by being banned from social networks such as Facebook, YouTube, Spotify and Twitter for violating hate speech policies.
But Jones claims he has paid his millions of dollars in damages, although the victims’ families say they are not convinced.
Sandy Hook killer Adam Lanza, 20, used a Remington Bushmaster rifle to carry out the massacre, which ended when he killed himself as police sirens approached.
