The November 26 earthquake did not spare even the monuments of our cultural heritage.
Tower C of Durrës castle was partially collapsed by the earthquake, while its restoration was completed 2 years after the start of works.
At the end of the process, the tower returned to its identity was inaugurated with the participation of the US Ambassador Yuri Kim and the Swedish Ambassador Elsa Hastad, who have followed the process closely before.
When I came in January 2020 it was winter and everything was still ruined. There was rubble and pain, but the endurance and courage of the Durrës people was strong. Both this fortress and the people of Durrës will continue to stand on their feet. Long live the Albanian-American friendship! Long live Durrës! Long live this castle! ”said US Ambassador Yuri Kim,
“We were here when the disaster happened and we reacted quickly. Together we are stronger and proud that we joined together to intervene together with the United States Embassy to rebuild 3 wonderful sites Kruja, Preza and Durres. “This tower has been a point of defense and attack since ancient times and here we are with it with the belief that we will do the future together.” said Swedish Ambassador Elsa Hastad.
Tower C is part of the fortification of the city of Durrës and its restoration was made possible by the program of the Ambassadors Fund and the Swedish government with a value of about 350 thousand dollars.
“The tower turned into a building symbol of destruction by natural disaster…”, said the Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti
For the second time in its history, after the devastating earthquake of 1273, the earthquake of November 26, 2019 knocked down a part of the Tower, which was restored with materials left over from the destruction.
Built in the period of the Byzantine emperor Anastasios, the surrounding wall with the tower is one of the historical symbols of the coastal city and its unbreakable existence from early antiquity to the present day.
