The UN General Assembly elected the Czech Republic to replace Russia in the human rights council with 157 votes in favor and 23 abstentions at a meeting on Tuesday.
The Czech Republic’s mandate on this council begins on Tuesday and ends on 31 December 2023.
On April 7, the UN General Assembly voted to suspend Russia from the Council, with 93 votes in favor, 24 against and 58 abstentions, on the grounds that Russia had committed serious and systematic human rights violations in Ukraine.
The United States led the April 7 initiative to suspend Russia following its February 24 invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation.”
Russia was in the second year of its three-year term on the Human Rights Council. The Czech Republic will end that term in the council, which cannot take legally binding decisions. However, his decisions have political weight and may authorize investigations.
Exactly this Thursday, the Human Rights Council will hold a special session on Ukraine, after Kiev called for a review of the situation there, including reports of mass casualties in Mariupol.
