From Podgorica, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and enlargement commissioner Olivér Várhelyi congratulated Montenegro for supporting and aligning with the bloc’s policies in sanctioning Russia and condemning its invasion of Ukraine and urged the small Balkan nation to to continue with the necessary reforms to advance towards EU membership, thus implying a support for the line followed by Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic, who earlier offered to resign.
He expressed this readiness after the Democratic Montenegro party said that it would have to do such a thing as soon as the process of elections for the judicial bodies is completed.
“We should all have a broader consensus on unblocking the judiciary, the Constitutional Court. Let’s all contribute to this and say: ‘Okay, we’re going to new elections. But before that, let’s do a joint job. If my fellow Democrats, if I have interpreted the announcement correctly, think so, I am ready to resign“, said Abazovic for “Vijesti”.
He has recently been criticized by the parties in Montenegro, even by government partners, while he has lost confidence in the Assembly of President Milo Djukanovic’s party due to the agreement on the establishment of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro.
But in relation to foreign policy, the prime minister’s line is seen favorably in Brussels. Borrell thanked Montenegro for “aligning itself fully with EU foreign policy decisions” after the country joined EU sanctions against Russia and defied Moscow.
Abazovic insisted that EU membership remains the only option for Montenegro. He promised to seek wider support for further reforms.
