Tennis idol Boris Becker was found guilty of four of the 24 counts in the bankruptcy process. Now he could face jail time.
Former German professional tennis player Boris Becker was found partly guilty by the Southwark Crown court panel. Becker followed the decision with his face flushed to the ears. Out of the 24 counts against the 54-year-old, the trial panel considered as proven the accusations of hiding bank accounts, non-declaration of movable and immovable property as well as manipulations with loans and debts.
Judge Deborah Taylor will announce the sentencing decision against the three-time Wimbledon Tournament winner on April 29.
In 2017 a British court declared Boris Becker as a bankrupt person who is unable to pay off debts to pay various payments. According to prosecutor Boris Beckeri had not cooperated enough in the subsequent bankruptcy proceedings.
Prison sentence?
The trial of Boris Becker began on March 21. Becker’s lawyer, Jonathan Laidlaw, said that after his first Wimbledon victory in 1985 when he was just 17 Becker has made an extraordinary living. He did not know how to manage his money and assets and had no financial knowledge. The lawyer said Becker trusted his advisers a lot and was very dependent on them. Lawyer Laidlaw said his client did not intentionally try to defraud the authorities.
After the jury heard for about three weeks all those involved in the process, it found Becker guilty on four of the 24 counts. Following the jury’s decision, Judge Taylor will decide on the sentence at the end of April. If Becker were found guilty of all 24 counts, he could face up to seven years in prison.
After the end of his career in 1999 Becker has constantly faced the judiciary. In 2002 he was sentenced by a Munich court to probation as well as a fine for tax evasion./DW
