The Assemblies of Local Self-Government Associations of Albania, composed of the country’s mayors, have joined forces through unanimous decision-making for the merger of two associations that until yesterday represented the country’s municipalities separately, into a single one.
This decision paves the way for the representation of the local government by a single Association. The Association for Local Autonomy will be the sole representative of all municipalities in the country, in an important decision for the local government, which will be represented unified to protect the rights of the local government, the interests of the communities and local democracy.
This move comes at a key moment for the country, after the opening of negotiations for Albania’s integration into the European Union, and coincides with the start of public consultations for the drafting of the new Decentralization Strategy 2023-2030 and the Administrative-Territorial Reform in Albania. The union of Associations means the unanimous unification of local self-government in these important processes for the future of the country.
The interest of local communities, strengthening of local government, participatory democracy, integration and improvement of the quality of public services for every citizen of the country are the main pillars of the work of the Association for Local Autonomy, which is guided by the principles of the European Charter of Local Autonomy.
This voluntary union paves the way for the Association for Local Autonomy to represent, without political differences, all the interests of the country’s municipalities and their citizens, realizing the objectives of the local government, with democratic means and ways, through cooperation with state institutions, and various local and international organizations operating in the field of local self-government.
