The Council of Europe has officially expelled Russia from the main body of human rights on the continent because of its occupation and war in Ukraine.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Council said “the Russian Federation is no longer a member of the Council of Europe as of today, after 26 years of membership.”
The decision comes a day after Russia prevented the expected expulsion by withdrawing from the Council, the institution that drafted the European Convention on Human Rights.
The measure has concrete consequences. The human rights convention will be suspended for Russia and the Russians will no longer be able to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights against their government.
