The Committee of Experts for the Prevention and Control of Monkey Pox has gathered today at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to plan measures to prevent the spread of this virus, after the declaration of monkey pox as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Ogerta Manastirliu said: We have established a committee of experts for the prevention and control of monkeypox, prioritizing the drafting of a response and preparedness plan for all structures, in order to prevent and control this infectious disease. Therefore, this committee will work to monitor and follow the plan of measures being drawn up by the PIH. The first draft of the action plan has already been completed. Despite the fact that Albania is a country that enters the first level countries, so it is considered with a low risk, our measures and our preparation will be complete in order to strengthen our capacities”.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection said that measures have been taken to strengthen capacities, starting from the specific laboratory tests that are already carried out at ISHP.
“What we have done in anticipation of this decision of the World Health Organization is that we have strengthened our capacities in the virology laboratory at the Public Health Institute. Currently, 3,250 tests for the identification and diagnosis of monkeypox have arrived at the Institute during this period. On the other hand, in addition to increasing and strengthening our laboratory capacities, we have taken measures to strengthen the entire sentinel surveillance network. The Institute of Public Health has taken measures together with the Health Care Operator, with the structure of the Infectious Disease Hospital at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center for the training of doctors, a very important element in the function of controlling and preventing this disease,” he said. Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at ISHP, prof. Silva Bino said: What we have done so far at ISHP is laboratory preparation. So we have the capacity to identify the virus. We have also conducted trainings and we will conduct further trainings regarding sample collection and transport, as the recommendations have changed especially recently regarding the collection of some samples, in order to be as efficient as possible in diagnosis”.
On July 23, the WHO has activated its highest level of alert regarding the outbreak of monkeypox, declaring this virus a public health emergency of international concern.
