Cases of Covid infections are on the rise in some of Europe’s favorite holiday spots, raising fears of more chaos for millions this summer.
Great Britain, Spain, France, Greece and Germany are currently recording an increase in infections, while outbreaks are increasing with the same intensity in popular Caribbean islands.
Although holidaymakers now no longer need to prove they are Covid-free and vaccinated to be allowed into many European destinations and beyond, health authorities in Europe, who are alarmed by the rise in cases – have calls for a return of masks and perhaps some restrictions.
British Professor Martin McKee told MailOnline that holidaymakers are facing a summer of uncertainty.
“We can look at infection rates now, but that doesn’t tell us where they’ll be when we travel, and it doesn’t tell us whether it’s affected the people who will be flying to the same destination or the staff who will be serving us around the clock. “he said.
“Governments can pretend that everything is fine, but I fear that very soon the virus will prove them wrong,” he said.
Outbreaks across Europe are also being fueled by the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, which are thought to be even more infectious than the BA.2 strain that drove UK infections to a record 4.1 million in April .
