A team of experts in the US state of Virginia opened a box of relics from the time of the US Civil War. The box had not been touched for 130 years. It contained newspapers, books and ammunition of that period.
The box was unveiled in the state capital, Richmond, at a time when workers were completing the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee. The memorial to Lee was removed following protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year.
Records kept in the Library of Virginia show that the box was buried in 1877; dozens of locals had contributed there with about 60 objects.
Virginia’s Department of Historical Resources expert Kate Ridgway said the contents and design of the box match the historical record. Even though moisture had penetrated the box, still the items inside it were stored in a much better condition than expected.
