A British man who left the mother of his children for a refugee from Ukraine whom they took in to house him says his new adventure has cost him his job and his income.
Tony Garnett, 29, left his fiancee Lorna and their two children for refugee Sofiia Karkadym, 22, just two weeks after she came to stay with the family at their home in Bradford, northern Britain.
But a few days later the lady of the house, 28-year-old Lorna, accused Sofia of having her eye on her husband.
So Sofia packed up and left, but Lorna was surprised when her husband Tony, who worked as a security guard, followed her out of the house.
The young couple has faced a widespread wave of scorn and abuse on social media, some of whom have started petitions for Sofia’s deportation.
Now Tony says the problems have engulfed his personal life, leaving him unemployable by the media story.
He said of the network Daily Star: “Now we are just trying to survive with Sofiia, we don’t want to receive social assistance, before I had a good business but the story had its effect”.
He says that he has to take care of Sofia who has problems with one eye after the infection she suffered during her journey from Lviv to Britain.
“Now my priority is her, I have to take care of her,” he says.
Almost three months after the situation started, Tony says he has to ask for financial help from his family after selling many personal belongings.
Sofia tells how she is now accused of her actions causing British families not to accept refugees from Ukraine.
She continues: “My parents say they are ashamed of me and cannot go out.”
“They say that now because of what I did, no family in Britain will accept refugees from Ukraine.”
Sofia insisted sooner that there had been nothing between her and Tony until they left the couple’s home in Bradford, northern Britain.
The family had adopted Sofiia to do “their bit” to help refugees, with Tony previously saying he quickly bonded with her and even his two daughters, aged six and three, liked her.
Tony, who speaks Slovak with whom he got along with the Ukrainian woman, says that this situation had left his wife not understanding what was happening.
“At first we got along well, but then I could see that Lorna was getting jealous and angry with him,” says Tony, adding that after that Sofiia went to the gym with him and when they were at home they became more and more physically close.
