A young British woman who denounced being raped while on holiday at a seaside resort said she had been treated with contempt by the British consulate where officials had suggested she “enjoy the rest of the holiday”.
The victim, now known only as Lady B, had contacted the consulate after being attacked while she was with her friends at the tourist resort in Turkey in 2018.
But the woman says she was denied the opportunity to denounce the attack as she had not received proper information from the relevant government department so she was suggested to continue the holidays and enjoy them.
Authorities had suggested he had not provided enough information to police so he had to wait until he returned to Britain to make the denunciation.
But when she returned the police and her British lawyer could not investigate as the crime was alleged to have taken place in Turkey.
So Ms B was forced to return twice to Turkey to pursue the case with the police there but the perpetrators of the crime have not yet been found.
British ombudsman Rob Behrens later said authorities should ensure that neglect of such serious sexual assault incidents should no longer occur.
“In the age we live in, people assume that government agencies will show the greatest interest and understanding in the well-being of women in foreign countries,” he said.
British Foreign Office officials said that since the 2018 incident, steps have been taken to ensure that victims of such attacks are no longer left in the lurch.
“We are committed to learning from our mistakes to improve consular support abroad in cases of rape or sexual assault,” said one representative.
