The Mariupol iron and steel plant, known as Azovstal, was completely destroyed by Russian bombing.
The general director of Azovstol told the Telegram that the factory was hit, but did not specify the extent of the damage.
He said factory workers had taken security measures since the beginning of the war so that it did not pose a wider danger to residents.
The steel plant has been a key asset in Mariupol, on the Sea of Assov, which Moscow has been fighting for two weeks to acquire.
It is a small but strategic city for Russia, so there may be a land corridor between the Russian-backed separatist eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, and Crimea, the peninsula that Russia occupied and annexed in 2014.
