One of the most valuable blue diamonds ever put up for auction could sell for more than $ 48 million, according to Sotheby’s.
Named “The De Beers Cullinan Blue”, it is the world’s largest 15.10 carat blue diamond.
Describing the diamond as “extremely rare”, Sotheby’s added that only five gemstones over 10 carats have been auctioned off.
No one has ever been over 15 carats, “making the look of this perfect oyster a historic event in itself.”
The rare diamond was found in the Cullinan mine in South Africa in 2021 and has reached the highest ranking, according to the standards by which colored diamonds are judged.
The gemstone has extraordinary appearance and is of type IIb, which means that it contains boron and therefore has a gray tinge, according to the site of GIA website . Less than 0.5% of diamonds are part of such a category, the press release said.
“Blue diamonds of all kinds are rare in the market, but this is the rarest of the rare; “Nothing of a similar caliber has been auctioned off in recent years.” said in a press release Patti Wong, president of Sotheby’s Asia.
“Hundreds of millions of years in production, this extraordinary blue diamond is undoubtedly one of nature’s best creations. Now brought to life by one of the most skilled cutters in the world, it is the latest masterpiece, as rare and desired as the greatest works of art.
Blue diamonds are coveted because of their rarity and stunning color.
The Cullinan Mine has produced a range of gemstones, including the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond discovered in 1905, which is the largest diamond ever recorded, according to Cape Town Diamond Museum in South Africa.
“Josephine’s Blue Moon Is a 12.03 carat blue diamond that sold for $ 48.4 million in 2015. It still holds the auction record for the carat price of any diamond or gemstone.
Other recent discoveries include “The Sakura”, a 15.81-carat purple-pink diamond that sold for $ 29.3 million at Christie’s in May last year.
The De Beers Cullinan Blue is scheduled to be auctioned at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Luxury Week in late April.
