Births in the United States have been declining for nearly a decade, but 2019 saw the smallest number of babies born in 35 years, according to a study by the Washington-based Brookings Institution.
According to the study, about 300,000 fewer babies are expected in 2021.
The analysis comes at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has rocked the job market, disproportionately hurting working women.
According to the National Center for the Law on Women, last year, women’s labor market participation fell by 57% – the lowest level since 1988.
Due to the closure of schools as a result of the pandemic, millions of women have been forced to balance child custody with work and other responsibilities.
“When the labor market is weak, the overall birth rate falls; “When the job market improves, birth rates improve,” write Brookings Institution study authors Melissa Kearney and Philip Levine.
The final numbers for 2020 have not yet been published, but a CBS News summary for 32 US states shows 95,000 fewer births in 2020, compared to the previous year.
