North Korea has performed what is thought to be the largest missile launch since 2017. The medium-range missile is thought to have reached an altitude of 2,000 km before landing in the Sea of Japan.
Japan, South Korea and the United States have all condemned the launch, which is the seventh test of the month.
The UN, meanwhile, has banned North Korea from conducting ballistic and nuclear weapons tests and imposed tough sanctions.
But the East Asian state regularly opposes the ban, and leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to step up his country’s defense.
Experts cite numerous reasons behind the wave of concessions, including the signal of political power to global and regional powers, a desire by Kim Jong-un to put pressure on the US in long-stalled talks, and the practical need for test new engineering and military command systems.
