The Russian attacks on the city of Mariupol have been going on intensively for six weeks, causing incalculable damage.
The Ukrainian military says they are doing their best to defend their country and acknowledge that Russian forces have the main goal of taking full control of the city.
According to the BBC, it is believed that the Ukrainian forces were forced to return to the port area of the southern city at the Azovstal steel and iron plant, from where the counterattacks had started for weeks.
The siege of the city has hampered the supply of Ukrainian forces with food, water and ammunition, while also preventing the evacuation of the wounded.
Russian forces began the siege of Mariupol in early March killing thousands of civilians, while many residents remained trapped.
If Mariupol falls into Russian hands, it will secure control of a strategic area linking Moscow’s two fronts to the south and east.
Mariupol is home to more than 400,000 people before the war, while some of them fled to escape the war.
