Veliaj said that Tirana’s budget has increased by 350% – that is, 3.5 times in total – while only the municipality’s income has increased 4 times more. According to INSTAT, Tirana grows every year by 32,000 people, which, according to Veliaj, shows that the city’s destiny is to face housing and mobility issues. Among the most important projects carried out, the mayor mentioned iconic spaces such as “Skënderbej” square, the New Market, the Castle, the new Boulevard, Blvd. Bird I, etc.
“We have requalified 60 residential blocks and about 500 km of roads throughout the territory of Tirana, whether urban or rural. For the reconstruction process, we have 7 new neighborhoods. Meanwhile, we are building 24 schools in total, most of which have been completed, 16 dormitories and 506 individual apartments. Regarding the post-earthquake neighborhoods, we are ready to open Zall-Herri, Baldushku, we are halfway in Peza, meanwhile we have finished Ndroqi and Vaqarri. In terms of rural development, we have completed a series of connecting roads, such as the one that connects Krraba and Zall-Herri with Tirana. At the TEG roundabout, the southeast terminal of Tirana is ending, which we will open this fall. We have just opened the competition for the Northern Terminal at the Kamza bend. We have reconstructed 41 schools, we have completed 19 new schools of the “Lasgush Poradeci” or “Sami Frashëri” level. In September, we will open 12 new schools, such as “Bashkim Fino”. We have invested in 158 nurseries and kindergartens, our first battle was for the children. We returned to the city 9 libraries, 40 new gymnasiums for schools and 45 sports grounds”said Veliaj.
He said that after this year, when Tirana is the European Capital of Youth, next year efforts are being made to obtain the title of European Capital of Sport. Veliaj said that Tirana is one of the main candidates for this title, which would be a great opportunity to continue promoting our capital. He added that the engineering and medical dormitories have been completed, as well as the UBT campus with 8 new buildings. Also, the mayor mentioned that 70,000 students have been provided with the Student Card, which offers about 1,500 discounted services.
“For a green and clean Tirana, we have established a public company, Eco Tirana, a collaboration with the municipality of Verona and Vicenza. Today the city is day and night as far as cleanliness is concerned. Today, according to INSTAT, we have a doubling of property value for every citizen. You have seen that we also gave way to the Farka park, which is another discharge valve in the eastern part of the city. The toy corners have increased to 75 such. The principle has been to create a playground for children every month in a neighborhood of Tirana. We have 45 community parks, 45 km and 52 km of bike lanes. Regarding economic development, Veliaj said that the Municipality of Tirana has just received from the Albanian government the license to be the operator of a free economic zone in Kashar.
“Meanwhile, we have 24 markets in each of the units. We have a mobile market that travels around Tirana, mainly to accommodate street vendors and many of the problems we have had with selling on the street. Regarding the revitalization of cultural life and tourism, we have had 700 activities that are actively sponsored by the municipality every year. Anyone who has been to Tirana sees that Tirana is full of tourists,Veliaj underlined.
In terms of social issues, 419 families have been placed in social housing. Veliaj said that public transport has also increased from 200 to 400 buses, as well as announced some innovations next year in this sector, in cooperation with the Germans of “KFV” and “GIZ”. Veliaj said that the competition for the construction of the National Theater opens next week.
