Deputies of the Assembly of Kosovo started on Thursday, January 20, discussions on the price of electricity, following the proposal of the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) in Kosovo to increase it.
Opposition party MPs have accused the Kosovo government of mismanaging the electricity situation and opposed proposals to increase energy prices.
The MP of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Ferat Shala, has asked the Government not to proceed further with the prices proposed by ERO, as the consequences will be great.
“As a parliamentary group we seek to return this issue to zero,” said Shala.
The head of the Parliamentary Group of Vetëvendosje Movement, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, said that the previous governments are to blame for the situation created with the issue of electricity.
“It is not the Vetëvendosje Movement that brought this situation, it is the actions or inactions of the parties that were in power, which brought the bill that today we are all facing,” said Kusari Lla
The proposal of the Energy Regulatory Office in Kosovo, for increasing the tariffs for electricity consumed has divided consumers into five categories: A, B, C, D, E.
As explained in the Consultation Report of ERO for the increase of energy prices affects only two categories of households, D and E, respectively those citizens who spend over 800, respectively over 1000 kilowatts.
For category D, which consumes 800 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, the bill is expected to increase by 12 euros and 31 cents.
For category E citizens, who spend 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, the bill is expected to increase by 24 euros and 62 cents.
In order for the increase of electricity bills not to be so high and not to become unaffordable for a category of citizens, the Government of Kosovo has allocated an amount of 75 million euros in the form of subsidies.
These subsidies also apply to businesses, which – even after ERO’s proposal if approved – will not have an increase in electricity tariffs.
ERO came up with the proposal to increase the bills on January 17, as electricity prices have increased in European markets, thus affecting the prices of Kosovo imports.
Increased invoices, in case ERO’s proposal passes, will start from February 1, 2022, and their regular review is expected to take place in March 2023./REL/
