The body of the former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, who was shot dead the day before in a crime that shocked Japan and the world, has arrived at his home in Tokyo. Abe was shot dead while speaking at a political campaign event for his party in the southern city of Nara. Police investigating the attack said the suspect had a grudge against a “specific organization.”
The alleged attacker, named Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, believed Abe was part of it. He has already admitted that he fired with a homemade gun. But the police are not convinced and are investigating to see why Japan’s longest-serving prime minister was really targeted in this post, and if the perpetrator acted alone.
As Abe’s hearse arrived at his Tokyo residence, members of his own ruling Liberal Democratic Party, dressed in black, lined up to pay their respects.
Tributes will be performed near his coffin, while the burial ceremony will take place on Tuesday. The weapon that killed Abe was made using metal and wood, and it appeared to be wrapped in duct tape. Several other hand-made weapons and explosives were later found at the suspect’s house. The veteran politician was wounded in the neck during the attack and suffered heart damage.
Shinzo Abe was seen as one of Japan’s most powerful figures. The former leader continued to have great influence in the Liberal Democratic Party. In 2006, at the age of 52, he became the youngest Japanese prime minister, but left after a year due to health reasons, to return to this post in 2021, in which he secured two mandates. Abe came from a wealthy family with political experience. His father had served as foreign minister and his grandfather as prime minister.
