Haitian President Jovenel Moise was compiling a list of officials and businessmen linked to the drug trade before he was assassinated in July, the New York Times reported, adding that his plan was to make the list delivered to the US.
Moise was killed during a late-night raid on his home by a group of gunmen, including former Colombian soldiers. Haitian authorities have arrested 45 people in connection with the case, but no one has been charged yet.
Some of the detainees stated that submitting the list with the names of suspected drug traffickers was the priority of the president, the American newspaper writes, quoting three senior Haitian officials well informed with the investigations, writes REL.
“The document was just one of several reasons for the president’s clashes with powerful political and business figures, some of them suspected of drug and arms trafficking,” the Times wrote.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Government of Haiti, Ariel Henry did not respond to these allegations.
Moise’s assassination left Haiti in a political vacuum without an elected president and further fueled a wave of kidnappings by gangs that now control most of the country.
The government promised to clear up the case but justice officials have stated several times that they are facing threats and death.
