A vocal critic of Armenia’s government, arrested two months ago, died suddenly today during his trial in the capital Yerevan, sparking widespread public outrage from the opposition and the ombudsman.
Armen Grigorian, a well-known TV producer, suddenly lost consciousness in the courtroom as his lawyer asked the judge to release him from custody.
56-year-old Grigorian was pronounced dead by the ambulance group that arrived about 10 minutes later at the scene.
“They performed first aid procedures but to no avail,” said Taguhi Stepanian, head of the national ambulance service.
Grigorian’s sudden and unexplained death will be determined by forensic analysis, officials said.
Grigorian has been criticizing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinia for years, but was arrested in May on charges of inciting hatred for comments about two regions that support the government.
Grigorian and the opposition said the charges are politically motivated.
Neither the ministry nor the police have yet provided information on what may have happened to Armen Grigorian.
