Former Finnish President Nobel Peace Prize winner and often described as the architect of Kosovo’s independence, Martti Ahtisaari, has been hospitalized after falling ill with Covid for the second time.
Former international conflict mediator Ahtisaari, 84, was first infected with the coronavirus in March 2020.
His foundation announced his hospitalization, but says the condition appears to be stable at the moment.
Ahtisaari was the UN special envoy for Kosovo in charge of organizing the Kosovo status process negotiations, on the basis of which Kosovo declared independence on February 17, 2008.
President of Finland from 1994 to 2000, Ahtisaari was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 for his contribution to ending conflicts in Indonesia, Namibia or Northern Ireland.
He retired from public and political life in September after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
The document drafted by him, also known as the Ahtisaari package, was the one that outlined the contours of the state of Kosovo.
This plan was the result of Kosovo’s long efforts to reach a solution to its final status.
