Ruben Ostlund’s social satire, “Triangle of Sadness,” won the Palme d’Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. The Swedish director received one of the most prestigious cinema awards for the second time, after the one with the film “The Square” 5 years ago.
“I am just happy, of course. It’s madness. Do you know what I am happiest about? “Because we intended to make a wild, entertaining film where we had content that we thought was important, where the audience should discuss it after the film is over.” said Ruben.
The awards were selected by a nine-member jury led by French actor Vincent Lindon and presented on Saturday at a closing ceremony inside Cannes’ Grand Lumière Theater.
The second prize of the jury was divided between the soft childhood drama “Close” by Lucas Dhont and the romantic thriller by director Claire Denis, “Stars at Noon”.
The ‘Best Actress’ award went to Zar Amir Ebrahimi for her performance as a journalist in Ali Abbas’s “Holy Spider”.
Swedish-Egyptian director Tariq Saleh received the “Best Screenplay” award for “Boy From Heaven”, a thriller set in Cairo’s Al-Azhar Mosque.
Saturday’s closing ceremony ended with a Cannes trying to fully revive France’s annual extravagance, an event which was canceled in 2020 by the pandemic and organized without modest crowds last year.
This year’s festival was also characterized by the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which sparked protests on the red carpet and a dialogue about the purpose of wartime cinema.
