The 57-year-old who took a pig’s heart during the world’s first pig heart transplant has a criminal past.
He stabbed a man seven times leaving him paralyzed, according to BBC.
David Bennett, was convicted after stabbing Edward Shumaker in 1988.
Leslie Shumaker Downey said her brother died in 2007 after nearly two decades of health complications associated with the attack.
According to the team that conducted the operation, someone’s criminal records can never be a reason to refuse their treatment.
The attack occurred in April 1988 after Bennett’s wife sat on the lap of Schumaker, who was 22, Downey said.
In a rage of apparent jealousy, Bennett stabbed Schumacher in the back.
Bennett was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Downey stated that no one had contacted her about Bennett surgery and only heard the news when she told her daughter.
Recall that Bennett is recovering from an experimental procedure that lasted seven hours in Baltimore, where he successfully transplanted the heart of a genetically modified pig.
