Irma Lydya, the 21-year-old Mexican singer who was killed by her lawful husband, the 79-year-old lawyer, had been trying to divorce for two months before Jesús Hernández shot her to death inside a restaurant in the capital Mexico City.
Lydya was having dinner at ‘Suntory’, a Japanese restaurant in the exclusive Benito Juárez area, when Hernández shot her to death in her private room on Thursday.
Hernández and his personal bodyguard, Benjamin Hernández, were stopped at the restaurant as they tried to leave.
The local daily ‘Excelsior’ wrote that the local folk music artist had contacted a lawyer to start the divorce process, after he had made a series of denunciations of domestic violence, giving evidence of blows to the face.
Lydya had reported to the police after Hernández had beaten her in December 2021, while in another case he had threatened her with a gun.
But despite the episodes of violence Lydya had decided to give her marriage a second chance.
It is not known for how long Lydya was married to Jesús Hernández.
A witness told the Univision network that Jesús Hernández had shot Lydya several times at close range, and that one of the bullets had hit him in the head.
Lydya was expected to perform over the weekend at a concert in Glendale, California, at a series of events bringing together well-known US and Central American singers.
Jesús Hernández’s request to be placed under house arrest was rejected by the court.
He is expected to stand trial on Thursday.
