A gunman suspected of being a terrorist has been shot dead by police in Sweden this afternoon after stabbing at least eight people.
The young assailant in his 20s was shot by officers and then taken to hospital following a hysterical massacre in the southern town of Vetlanda.
Investigators told local media that the attack was a “possible terrorist act” although no further details were given at this time.
The attacker injured eight people, some of them in serious condition, with a cutting tool, a police spokesman said.
It was not clear how many of the victims are in serious condition.
Police told a news conference that the attacker was known to authorities, but gave no further details.
Local police chief Malena Grann said: “We are investigating whether there is a motive for terror, working closely with national security authorities.”
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven condemned the “terrible violence”.
“Tonight I think of the wounded in Vetlanda and their relatives. I condemn this horrible violence. “We face these evil acts with the collective strength of society.”
Interior Minister Michael Damberg said the attacker’s motive was unclear: “Some people are seriously injured. So far it is unclear what exactly happened and the motive. “Police have arrested the suspected perpetrator and launched an investigation into the incident and the security situation in Vetlanda.”
