Swedish police are investigating terrorism as a possible motive for the knife attack that rocked Sweden the day before.
Reuters news agency follows details from the investigation, confirming that the aggressor, a young man in his 20s is an Afghan refugee, who entered Sweden in 2018.
It injured eight people in various locations in downtown Vetlanda, located about 275 kilometers southwest of Stockholm. Hospital sources claim that three of the injured are in more serious condition, but their situation has stabilized.
Police are investigating the crime as attempted murder and are considering possible links to terrorism. Swedish Interior Minister Mikael Damberg said it was important to wait for the investigation before drawing conclusions.
The identity of the attacker has not yet been made public, but authorities say he has been known to police for several minor crimes. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said the “terrible violence” was a reminder of “how weak our secure existence is”. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area where the attack took place.
