About 600,000 Catholics participated in the act of crucifixion of Christ in the Mexican capital, after two years of interruption from illness.
“Traditional things were lost but now we hope they come back because it is a pleasure,” said 63-year-old Susana Montano, who has attended the ceremony since she was a child.
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said about 600,000 people had gathered to celebrate the 179th anniversary of the tradition this year.
About 100 people took part in the staging of the Catholic legend, which included actors and musicians who had long been preparing for roles.
Spectators with photos of loved ones in their hands climbed trees or walked through the crowd to watch up close the thrilling staging of Christ’s crucifixion.
