Talks on reviving the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers will resume on February 8 in Vienna, amid warnings from Tehran that the lifting of US sanctions is a “red line” to implement the pact again.
The United States has said an agreement could be reached with Iran, but it must be reached urgently, as Tehran is already advancing its nuclear capabilities.
“An agreement is on the horizon that addresses the concerns of all parties, but if it is not reached within weeks, Iran’s nuclear advancement will make a return impossible for us,” said a State Department spokesman.
The resumption of negotiations, which stopped on January 28, allowing diplomats to return home for consultations, has been announced by the European Union.
In 2015, Tehran reached an agreement with world powers to limit nuclear activity in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.
But former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions, causing Iran to gradually evade the commitments made in the deal.
The parties have held eight rounds of negotiations in Vienna – since April last year – with the aim of reviving the agreement.
“The issue of lifting sanctions and what Iran benefits from this is a red line for Iran in the talks,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a news conference in Tehran on February 7.
Washington announced on February 4 that it had reinstated some anti-sanctions measures – lifted by Trump – a move that Tehran said was insufficient.
“Washington has decided to take a step that has no effect on Iran’s economic situation. A responsible (US) government must return to the agreement and implement its obligations,” Khatibzadeh said.
