The West will prevent Tehran from building nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic formulates its terms at the beginning of the new round of talks.
Iran enters new round of talks to reactivate the 2015 international agreement on its nuclear program with a request to lift US sanctions. “The minimum goal of this round of talks should be the re-normalization of Iranian oil exports and access to oil money in foreign banks,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian in Tehran. During the talks in Vienna since Monday (27.12), the limitation of the nuclear program of Iran requested by the West is being discussed again. The aim is to prevent the Islamic Republic from building nuclear weapons.
Washington in 2018 under the leadership of former President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear weapons deal and imposed sanctions on Iran. The oil embargo and restrictions on the flow of payments have stripped Iran of its most important source of revenue. Opposing these measures Iran after a one-year waiting period gradually exceeded the red lines set by the agreement. Among other things, uranium is now enriched to a quota of 60 percent. This quota is very close to the percentage of uranium purity needed for atomic explosive capsules.
Although the head of Iran’s nuclear program, Mohammed Eslami, has ruled out enriching up to 90 percent of uranium suitable for nuclear weapons even if talks fail, the United States is talking about other sanctions if no compromise is reached.
Among the points of contention that need to be resolved in Vienna are not only the steps for de-escalation by both sides, but also the order of these steps that need to be taken. Iran demands that the US first withdraw sanctions and insists on guarantees that Washington will not withdraw from the agreement again.
So far in the seven rounds of talks Iran and the US have not been able to reach agreement despite mediation efforts by Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia and China. US representatives do not participate directly in the new round that is taking place in the Austrian capital, but they are indirectly related to the talks./ DW
