The Taliban’s plans to set up “martyrs’ brigades” as part of the Afghan army have been condemned as “terrible and despicable” by human rights groups.
The development comes after the Taliban announced the creation of a battalion of “suicide bombers” that will join the Afghan National Army.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the ruling militant group, gave the shocking announcement.
He told The Times: “Our mujahideen (guerrilla fighters) of the martyrs’ brigades will also be part of the army, but within the special forces.”
“These forces will be controlled by the defense ministry and will be used for special operations.”
The former terrorist group has many precedents of using suicide missions before coming to power in Afghanistan last summer.
For the past 20 years, extremists have used suicide bombers to carry out attacks in Afghanistan for and in various western countries.
Many of the suicide bombings in Afghanistan have been carried out by minors or children.
The group is now seeking to establish new suicide squads to “defend Afghanistan,” said Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi.
According to reports, their target will be the new branches of ISIS, which have carried out at least five heavy attacks in the country since the withdrawal of US forces in August.
Most of their attacks were carried out by suicide bombers, writes the NDTV network.
Mullah Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, the deputy governor of Badakhshan province, said the battalion in question was called Lashkar-e-Mansoori, or ‘Mansoor Army’, which was set up to attack Afghanistan’s former government.
He said: “The US defeat would not have been possible if it were not for this battalion.”
“They are people who do not know fear and dedicate themselves to the acceptance of Allah.”
