The no-confidence motion against the head of the Assembly of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, initiated by the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, has not passed. The parliament of the neighboring state continued its work until shortly before midnight with position-opposition debates about Xhafer’s work.
43 MPs voted “for” the motion while 61 others voted “against” causing the motion not to pass.
The opposition accused Xhaferi of misconduct and violation of the procedures of the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure. The motion was raised after the opposition’s claims that Xhaferi had locked the doors of the session hall, keeping the deputies inside against their will.
“You say that you wanted to count the deputies, this is not correct, the services count the employees according to Article 95 paragraph 4 and this is not disputed that you do it and do it regularly. But the security services close the door but not according to this procedure as you do. This is a criminal offense”, said VMRO-DPMNE coordinator Nikola Micevski.
Xhaferi said that the law allows such a thing when the quorum is ascertained.
“The service has the duty to do its work conscientiously. If I have closed the doors according to the Regulation, let the factual situation be ascertained, because that is the procedure. Unlike anyone else, I have not opened the doors by exposing people’s lives”, said Xhaferi, recalling the 2017 incident in the Assembly of North Macedonia.
Afterwards, Xhaferi was accused of insulting the employees of the Assembly and did not take any action to remove the deputy of DUI, Arbër Ademi, as the chairman of the Commission for European Affairs after a moment of tension in one of the meetings of this commission.
However, the DUI and Social Democratic League MPs defended Xhaferi and accused the opposition of trying to create unnecessary tension situations in the country.
Xhaferi, throughout the session, was sitting in the seat of the deputy while the session was led by his deputy Goran Misovski.
