Israeli missiles fired from the Mediterranean Sea hit the Syrian port of Latakia early today, destroying the commercial container terminal, Syrian media reported, in the second attack in a month on the important plant.
It is a rare thing to hit the port that handles the imports of Syria, the country devastated by international civil war for more than a decade, without counting Western economic sanctions on it.
The state-run SANA news agency quoted military sources as saying that Israeli missiles coming from the west hit the container terminal in the port of Latakia, setting it on fire and causing extensive damage.
The official added that firefighters were still fighting the blaze about an hour after the attack, which means that the attack was carried out with incendiary weapons to cause as much destruction as possible.
Syrian media showed footage of flames and smoke rising from the terminal. There was also damage to residential buildings, shops and some tourist sites near the port.
No casualties were immediately reported from the attack, which had activated Syria’s air defense systems but without stopping the multitude of missiles, the SANA agency said.
A similar attack was reported on December 7, when Israeli planes hit the same terminal, causing fires and explosions.
The media said today’s attack was fiercer as explosions were heard as far as Tartus, the other coastal town about 80 miles away.
The British monitoring group The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said earlier that “the shipment of weapons to Iranian-backed fighters” had been hit in the December 7 attack.
There has been no comment yet from the Israeli military, which has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on targets inside Syria during the 10-year conflict, but never admits or discusses such operations.
Israel has admitted to hitting Iran-backed military targets in Syria, which is the country’s ally, and has been invited by Bashar al-Assad’s government to help secure the country from foreign interference.
