Sweden has taken important steps towards meeting Turkey’s requirements for NATO membership.
The head of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, says the Nordic country has expressed readiness to meet Turkey’s claims on two points.
After a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, Stoltenberg said that Sweden has already begun to change its anti-terrorism legislation and will adopt the legal framework for arms exports in order to reflect its future membership status. of NATO with new obligations to the allies.
“The aim is to resolve the dispute as soon as possible, so that Finalda and Sweden can become members of the alliance as soon as possible. “We are working hard to resolve these issues and we are holding close consultations with Stockholm, Helsinki and of course our NATO ally, Turkey.” said Stoltenberg.
In mid-May, Sweden and Finland applied to join the defense alliance due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
But just hours after Finland and Sweden submitted their application for NATO membership, Turkey thwarted the plan and blocked the decision to start the membership process.
For Sweden and Finland to be part of the military alliance, all its members must approve their membership.
