In the food bowl of the people of Purapuli, Kenya, you no longer find real food but wild berries.
The residents there are suffering from extreme hunger, while their children are getting weaker and weaker.
Loka Metir, a resident of the area, knows that the bitter fruit makes her children sick, but it has not rained properly for three years and there is simply nothing else to eat.
“This is the only way we know how to survive. We are used to our situation now. We don’t know how to grow crops and all our animals have died from the drought. We are just waiting to die of hunger here.”
“This time the drought is even worse. Even in the past there were but they were further apart in time, more animals would survive than die and those that lived would recover as soon as it rained and provide us with milk and meat. Now, it doesn’t happen like that, our cattle are dying, people are dying”, said Iripiyo Apothya.
Residents say that even the water they drink is poisoning them, as it is polluted and full of worms.
