Thanas Veliu, from the village of Grabjan i Divjaka, even though he is 63 years old, he calls himself a young farmer, because only in the last ten years of his life he started planting sunflowers and wheat.
For him, growing sunflowers is easier than raising a vegetable greenhouse.
“Because it’s a culture that doesn’t want a lot of manpower”, says farmer Thanas Veliu,
Thanasi says that Albania has the ideal climate for sunflowers. The construction of a flower oil factory, according to the 63-year-old, would bring an increase in planting with this agricultural crop, as well as a cheaper price of cooking oil. For the village, Grabjan, is Ukraine.
“The policy of the Ministry of Agriculture should go towards the cultivation of industrial crops. That is, just as some olive oil factories have been made, we need an oil factory for the sunflower. why should we rely on two traders who bring us oil from Ukraine, when Ukraine is here”, says Veliu.
Fields with sunflowers promise the farmer a satisfactory income.
“The merchant comes to us and takes it, I don’t know where it goes. This seed is used for oil and bird feed. 60 old lek. I calculate that 35-40 ha, while the other that is used for bags does not go more than 20 quintals per Ha”.
A decade ago, Thanas decided to plant wheat and sunflowers on an 11 ha plot of land, he says he made the right choice by emigrating to become a farmer. For the crop areas to increase, the 63-year-old says that the farmer’s vision is not enough if he does not support.
According to him, our country can get rid of the import of wheat from Russia and oil from Ukraine if the Albanian government creates the right policies for those who love land and agriculture.
