The United States is committed to providing Ukraine with the “weapons it needs” to defend itself against Russia, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday, as Ukraine seeks more military assistance from the West.
Sullivan said President Biden’s administration would send more weapons to Ukraine to curb Russia’s progress and its attacks on civilians, which Washington has labeled war crimes.
“We will give Ukraine the weapons it needs to defeat the Russians, to stop them from taking control of more towns and villages where they are committing crimes,” Sullivan told ABC News’ This Week.
Moscow has denied allegations of war crimes committed by Ukraine and Western countries.
Speaking later on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” show, Mr. Sullivan said the United States “was working all the time to deliver weapons… and to organize and coordinate the delivery of weapons from many other countries.”
“Weapons are arriving every day,” Sullivan said, “including today.”
The United States has sent $ 1.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia launched its aggression on February 24, the White House said last week.
Weapon shipments have included Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and Javelin anti-tank missiles, as well as ammunition and body defenses. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is urging US and European leaders to send heavier weapons and equipment to counter Russian forces in the eastern region of the country, where Russia is expected to intensify its military efforts.
In an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that will be broadcast later on Sunday, Mr. Zelenskiy said that the reversal of the Russian incursion “depends on how quickly we will be assisted by the United States.” “To be honest, our survival depends on this,” he said.
“I have 100% confidence in our people and in our armed forces, but unfortunately I do not have confidence that we will get everything we need,” he said.
Russia on Saturday appointed a new general to lead its forces in Ukraine, Alexander Dvornikov.
Dvornikov, 60, is one of Russia’s most experienced military officers. According to US officials, he has a history of brutality against civilians in Syria and other wars.
National Security Adviser Sullivan told CNN that he expects General Dvornikov to orchestrate crimes and brutality against Ukrainian civilians.
Mr Sullivan said the general’s appointment “could not cover up the fact that Russia has already faced a strategic failure in Ukraine”.
A CBS News poll released Sunday showed widespread support among Americans for sending more weapons to Ukraine.
According to the poll, which was conducted last week, 72% of respondents favor sending more weapons, while 78% support economic sanctions against Russia./VOA
