The sensational legal battle to stay in Australia, thus failing to achieve his dream of a 21st Grand Slam record, has ended in deep disappointment for Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic.
Australian judges rejected his appeal after the government revoked the visa of the unvaccinated player, for the second time this month for reasons of public health safety.
Djokovic said he was “extremely disappointed” but respected the decision as he boarded the plane to travel to Dubai.
Djokovic’s ousting provoked strong reactions, including from President Aleksandar Vucic:
“Those who think they have adhered to certain principles in doing so have only shown that they have no principles. The best tennis player in the world was mistreated for ten or eleven days, only to oust him. Had it not been said that anyone who is not vaccinated is not allowed to enter (Australia), either Novak Djokovic would not have come, or he would have been vaccinated. “It seems they wanted a show, aimed at Djokovic, to show how the world order of witch-hunting works.”
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic was just as harsh:
“This is a scandalous decision, I am disappointed. It showed how the rule of law works in some countries and how it does not work in others.
Djokovic’s visa was initially revoked on January 6 at Melbourne Airport hours after he arrived to compete in the first Grand Slam of 2022 at the Australia Open.
