Traditional sports betting halls will not open, but the same cannot be said for digital ones.
In a meeting that the Ministry of Education and Sports Evis Kushi held with the Albanian National Olympic Committee following the hearings on the importance of the law on sponsorships and other mechanisms to support sports and federations, the ministry was adamant when it said that the decision to close gambling halls and sports betting in December 2018, has been the right one.
Betting halls in every neighborhood brought an alarming situation to many families, significantly increasing the number of people addicted to gambling, and this situation as KOKSH and MAS said they will not return. But the minister left an open path in terms of formalizing the digital market.
“I heard their arguments on the formalization of the digital market according to the best models of other countries. We will continue with other hearings in the coming days. “– said Evis Kushi
Despite the fact that this activity is illegal in Albania, many people operate online bets on sites such as loj55.com, Bet365, buda355.com, bursa7777.club, 365skybet.com etc. These sites have servers outside Albania and certain persons have access through a user by placing online bets and making the payment online through cards.
As of June 21, state police have identified 170 cases of online sports betting and arrested 121 people and prosecuted 178 others at large.
But in the latest report submitted to parliament, the intelligence services raise a strong alarm about the involvement of organized crime in online betting, due to high profits and lack of control.
“Corruption and crime in the economy remain worrying phenomena that undermine economic equality between citizens and the rule of law. The crimes in the most widespread economies are: tax evasion, through the application of various abusive practices and schemes; smuggling of excise goods, manifested through the manipulation of customs documentation, as well as foreign cash banknotes and precious metals above the allowed value; conducting informal gambling; informal lending outside banking instruments, informal application of virtual cryptocurrencies and unlicensed brokerage. ”- the report states.
