Researchers in South Africa have found that those people who are infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus have more immunity to the Delta variant.
The conclusion is the result of a new study conducted by the Durban-based African Health Research Institute, which included 33 vaccinated and unvaccinated people. The scientists found that immunity to a further exposure to Omicron increased 14-fold about two weeks after infection, while also finding that immunity against the Delta variant improved 4.4-fold.
Scientists say immunity increased especially in those people who were not vaccinated. The study, which has not been reviewed by health experts, was submitted to the medical journal MedRxiv. A previous study from South Africa found a reduced risk of hospitalization and serious illness from Omicron, compared to Delta.
The Omicron type has spread rapidly around the world since it was first discovered in South Africa in November./VOA
