“Residents were scared, we are not used to earthquakes,” said the mayor of Cyprus’ main coastal city, Pegeia, after this morning’s quake.
The strong and relatively shallow earthquake hit the western shores of the Mediterranean island at around 03.00 in the morning. Its epicenter was about 50km west of Polis town but there were no reports of injuries or damage.
The tremors were felt throughout Cyprus and the region, according to reports from Turkey, Israel and Lebanon, the US Geological Survey said. Buildings were also shaken in the Cypriot capital Nicosia, 130 miles[130 km]away, and some people took to the streets. “It was scary. “The whole building was shaking, it seemed to never end,” a Nicosia resident told AFP.
Cypriot police said there were no reports of injuries or serious damage to buildings, but people had woken up across the island.
“We were in bed and we woke up – the quake went on for a long time,” said Carol Bailey, a French teacher and resident of Limassol.
She added that her friends in other cities had felt the vibrations of buildings and the vibrations of lampshades.
