Hundreds of British Airways employees at Heathrow Airport voted today to go on strike following a pay dispute.
There are about 700 employees who have decided to block work in the coming days after saying they did not get what they were promised.
British Airways on the other hand said the unions had refused a 10% pay rise, but employees claim the airline’s offer was a ‘one-time’ bonus and its members want the full salary back.
Heathrow, Britain’s largest airport has been plunged into chaos since March after a large number of security, airport traffic control and baggage handling staff were laid off during the pandemic.
The airport has failed to manage a ‘baggage crisis’ which has brought chaos with their collection outside Terminal 2. Passengers who have lost their luggage have complained on social media that they have been forced to wait a week to retrieve their bags .
Tens of thousands of passengers have already been hit by airport shutdowns with flight cancellations in recent weeks and meanwhile, half the rail network has been shut down in England, Wales and Scotland as part of a second rail strike this week
Only one in five trains run, mainly on main lines, while in some other areas there are reportedly no trains at all.
