NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg reacted after Vladimir Putin’s Victory Day speech by urging the Russian president to end the war in Ukraine immediately.
In a comment to the German newspaper Die Welt, Stoltenberg said Putin should withdraw his troops from the neighboring country as soon as possible and start peace negotiations.
Stoltenberg: We strongly stand by Ukraine and will continue to assist this country in exercising its right to self-defense. Moscow must return to the negotiating table.
Stoltenberg said Putin has regularly used his May 9 speech to spread lies about the West and criticize NATO. “I expect him to continue to spread lies about NATO and the West in general,” said the head of the globe’s largest military alliance. During his Victory Day speech, Putin congratulated his military and said the West had made “conspiracies” to threaten Russia.
Russia launched the aggression on February 24, as it did not receive, as it said, a guarantee from NATO that it would not expand further east. The Russian and Ukrainian delegations started peace talks soon after the start of the war, but so far they have not yielded any results.
