NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine immediately.
Speaking to the German newspaper Die Welt, Stoltenberg said Putin should withdraw his troops from Ukraine and start peace negotiations.
“We stand firmly by Ukraine and will continue to assist this country in exercising its right to self-defense,” Stoltenberg said.
The comments come on the day Russia marks Victory Day, or what is known as the defeat of Nazi Germany, in 1945.
Stoltenberg said Putin has regularly used his May 9 speech to spread lies about the West and criticize NATO.
“I expect Putin to spread lies again about NATO and the West in general,” he said.
During his Victory Day speech, Putin congratulated his military and said the West had made “conspiracies” to threaten Russia.
According to Putin, the “military operation” in Ukraine was “necessary” and “timely.”
Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24 after receiving no assurances from NATO that it would not expand further east.
Thousands of people have been killed in fighting and millions have been displaced from their homes.
The Russian and Ukrainian representatives have started peace talks soon after the outbreak of war, but so far they have not yielded any results.
The West has taken tough economic and diplomatic sanctions against Russia, while Ukraine is helping with arms.
