Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has told the military to do “whatever is necessary to restore order” after protesters stormed his office on Wednesday.
He has been appointed acting president by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who has fled the country.
But the decision to leave him in charge sparked further protests, calling for the prime minister to step down as well. Radio Free Europe writes that Sri Lanka is suffering from its worst economic crisis in decades.
In a televised address, Wickremesinghe called on protesters to leave his office and other state buildings and cooperate with authorities.
“We cannot tear up our constitution. We cannot allow fascists to take power. We must end this fascist threat to democracy,” he said.
Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after the president fled abroad to escape anti-government protests as thousands took to the streets, again angry that he had yet to surrender.
