Staff at Sri Lanka’s main airport reportedly blocked the departure of the country’s president as he attempted to use the ‘VIP’ pass to catch a flight to Dubai.
Airport staff succeeded by blocking the path of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was forced to make the humiliating retreat.
Rajapaksa, who is expected to resign on Wednesday after months of violent protests, was trying to catch a plane to Dubai on Monday evening.
Immigration officials prevented the president from entering the VIP area to stamp his passport, and also from the regular queue to avoid attacks from the public.
As a result, Rajapaksa has missed several flights, along with his family and aides, while spending the last two nights at a military base.
The president’s attempts to leave the country have also failed due to the refusals by the Indian government to grant a visa, as the US representation in the country has also announced.
Several officials who spoke to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) agency said Rajapaksa may try to leave the island by military ship, but the reports have not been confirmed.
While still president, Rajapaksa has immunity from arrest, which is why he is avoiding resigning to avoid detention.
He is accused of a malicious campaign of mismanagement of the country’s economy that caused the worst financial crisis the country had ever seen.
