At the time when the 27th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre is commemorated, the images circulating on social media make the tragedy experienced by Bosniaks even more tangible.
The painful video footage, shared by Qamil Gjurakovi, the author of the book “Srebrenica – a forgotten promise”, shows the moment when UN doctors check the vital data of a baby, but see that the child is dead and return the body to the parents his, who burst into tears, cannot find consolation.
On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces entered Srebrenica, an area that had been declared safe by the United Nations.
In the days that followed, they executed over 8,000 Muslim men and boys there, dumping their bodies into pits and the surrounding forests. The massacre happened within a few days, but the process of finding the bodies and identifying and burying the remains is still ongoing.
The massacre of Srebrenica, which happened five months before the end of the war in Bosnia, has been described as the worst in Europe since the end of the Second World War, while the International Court of The Hague has recognized it as genocide.
