The cuckoo’s last nesting vulture in Europe has returned this year to at least three of its southern territories.
Joni, Ledi and Sonila ornithologists specializing in monitoring, studying and protecting the cuckoo horse traveled to Kurvelesh where they also set up a supplementary feeding station for these rare globally endangered birds. In a few hours they managed to spot a couple at rest on the site of a steep cliff. The images provided by the surveillance equipment were impressive.
The endangered cuckoo horse has reduced its population in the Balkans by almost 80% in the last 30 years. Ornithologists believe that at this stage the protection of its five territories in Albania is vital while it is hoped to increase with new individuals.
The team of the organization for the Protection and Conservation of the Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA) hopes that all individuals who traveled about 8000 km to spend the winter in Africa will return this year. Albania has lost at least 9 of its 14 cuckoo horse pairs since 2005. Poisoning and electroshock have been two of their threats during the nesting while specialists think that to save the species symbol widely spread throughout history will have to increase international efforts especially to ensure safety along the migration route.
