Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that Spain will reopen its embassy in Kiev, becoming the youngest country to return its diplomats to the Ukrainian capital.
Sanchez said the reopening would be a new sign of the commitment of the Spanish government and society to the Ukrainian people.
Spain evacuated its embassy in Kiev on February 27, shortly after the Russian occupation of Ukraine began. She transferred those functions to neighboring Warsaw, Poland, the Spanish Foreign Ministry’s press office said.
France announced last week that its embassy in Ukraine would return “very soon” to Kiev from Lviv, while Italy said on Saturday it intended to reopen its embassy in Kiev after Easter.
The European Union is also resuming its diplomatic presence in Kiev after relocating it temporarily to Poland following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the bloc announced on Friday.
Slovenia has also reopened its embassy in Kiev since March 28, according to the Slovenian Foreign Ministry.
